In the Department of Systems Innovation, students are able to gain new and cutting-edge knowledge through interdisciplinary approaches because they are not confined to the limits of their own laboratories. As such, collaboration is very much encouraged and I am challenged to think of new solutions for solving complex real-world problems. Through the engagement of different perspectives, I have become more motivated to explore better methodologies which are applicable to and help improve my research. In Kawasaki Laboratory, there is a close relationship among the students and our professor. I also appreciate that the lab seminars are all conducted in English. My research deals with quantitative spatial analysis and modelling of urban freight flows and I am currently involved in a joint research project with a logistics company. Collaborating with practitioners allows us to experience the joys of discovering new facts at a world-class level, and the exultations of understanding and adapting the theories we have learned in the classroom to the real world. Despite being female and a foreigner in the laboratory, the other members never failed to accommodate me. There is always a light atmosphere wherein we get to openly share our ideas or raise our concerns. I am greatly inspired by my lab mates who are ambitious, talented and open minded in overcoming existing barriers. Working together with them has been very enjoyable and I am excited for all our future endeavors.
